Otoplasty or ear surgery is a simple procedure that can correct the problem of protruding ears, which are the result of poor definition of the inner fold of the ear, causing it to become too separated from the head.
Besides protruding ears, otoplasty also includes other interventions as to correct ear cup or collapsed, you can correct the earlobe, and you can even create a new ear when the patient was born without or lost ear as a result of trauma.
Generally, the ear surgery is performed after 14 or 16 years old, however, surgery can be performed on younger children who suffer bullying because around seven years old his ears have reached the size that they have in adulthood.
In the first consultation, Dr. Martínez Gutiérrez will evaluate the problem and then plan the most appropriate procedure to achieve the best possible outcome in each case.
What is the procedure?
Ear surgery is performed in an operating either in a clinic or hospital. It is usually performed under local anesthesia in the case of adult or adolescent patients, whereas with young children we use general anesthesia, so you may need to stay overnight in the hospital.
The incision is usually made behind the ear, so the scar is practically invisible. After incision, the surgeon reshapes the cartilage of the ear, causing it to bend in the right places and, if necessary, removes excess shell and remove the excess skin from behind the ear.
After surgery, a bandage is applied that keeps the ears into position for a few days. When you go to sleep you should use some rubber bands to keep the ears to fold.
